Freedom or Death Plot The plot is set in the Cretan uprising of The central character, a wild, insubordinate warrior named Kapetan rebel leader Michalis, has sworn to remain unshaven and dressed in black, and not to laugh until Crete has been freed. But when he meets Emine, wife of his blood brother Nurey Bey, he is overcome by a "new demon"; for all his efforts, he cannot get her out of his mind. He kills Manoussakas, but is wounded in the genitals. This wound heals, but Nurey Bey commits suicide, being unable to bear the disdain and pity Emine shows him over his mutilation, while she becomes mistress to Kapetan Polyxigis.

At the same time, his writing is very affecting; being a Cretan himself you can see his deep love for his home testified on the pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and the last scene, with Zorbas and Basil dancing like mad on the ruins of their failed niks facility, is one of my favourite movie scenes altogether.
I am fascinated by the language, the atmosphere and everytime I find something new. Each man uncovers his true self when faced with these overwhelming odds. Through brilliant characterization, Kazantzakis shows us the many conflicting urges that pester the spirits of men.
Anyway, despite all this, the Cretan Greeks are rather fanatically determined to liberate themselves from Turkish rule; every now and then, they organise an uprising against the Turks, although these risings are always suppressed 2. My favorite is Zorba the Greek, definitely: Share your thoughts with other customers.
I realize this review is quite personal, but I just felt the need to share my thoughts and feelings about this masterpiece. The last few pages of the novel are delightfully cathartic, a glorious bloodbath, deatth a movie scene in slow-motion, and in the background you can almost hear the sort of pompous choral music that would typically accompany such a scene on a movie soundtrack.
