Her innovations in this regard are sometimes so startling and compelling that reviewers tend to focus on the novelty of her works to the exclusion of her ideas. Churchill, however, is a playwright of ideas, ideas that are often difficult and, despite her bold theatricality, surprisingly subtle and elusive. Each of these impediments to the development and happiness of the individual is explored in her works. Not surprisingly for a contemporary female writer, many times she makes use of female characters to explore such themes. Churchill has openly proclaimed herself a feminist and a socialist. She is also emphatic in her position that the two are not one and the same.

How a production of it might look. I found that Churchill hit on so many of the struggles of women in a patriarchal society. Women and sex, women and power, women and class, women and age, women and motherhood, women and marriage, women as property, etc.
This play I liked this play. This play portrays a story that takes place in a patriarchal and classist society and tells the story of life directly affected by that patriarchal and classist society, and the society in which we live here in the US in is a patriarchal and classist one but being able to see the impact of those oppressive systems on the stage in such an illustrative story allows us to see them in a way that we may not be able to see them in our every day lives.
But as an audience member looking at that same soup, the soup in which the characters are living, we may become better able to see it. And see the impact it has. And see how damaging and foolish it truly is. Play discussion group script Very applicable in todays world and church.

Vinegar Tom and the Feminist Revolution
Caryl Churchill wrote the songs into the play, with the intention of giving "real," modern women a voice onstage as the fictional, 17th-century scenes unfold. Helen Glavin wrote the music for the original, production of Vinegar Tom. For our own production, director Peter Larlham enlisted the talented Thomas Hodges to compose the music. As anyone involved in the show can attest, the songs add a strong emotional element to each performance. The lyrics to the songs as they appear printed in the script are listed below. Critical perspective For more than thirty years, Caryl Churchill has been combining social commitment with theatrical experimentation. Rarely in modern British drama has the combination been so fruitful. Her play-writing career began in radio in the s, encompasses numerous acclaimed stage plays, and from the s, has moved more and more into a mixed theatre of text, dance, and music. In other words, Churchill has traversed the dramatic spectrum, from word and sound alone in her radio plays, to a greater and greater emphasis on space and movement in her more recent work. What themes, then, run across this tremendously varied oeuvre?
Plot[ edit ] The play tells the story of Alice, who is in her twenties and living in a small village. Alice and her mother Joan are accused of witchcraft after an altercation with their neighbours, the couple Jack and Margery. These two experienced a number of frustrations including attempts at economic expansion and sex as well as other misfortunes. There were other accused in the story of the same crime, so that the narrative became a tale of the 17th century England using witchcraft as a means to shift the blame towards nonconforming woman such as the old, poor, single, cunning or skilled, to help temper social unrest. For context, one should take note that the play was written at the height of the second feminist movement in the 20th Century. Churchill, a highly influential feminist writer, used this specific script to display how much control men have in society and how women have historically been treated as chattel, taught to be subservient to men. All of the songs are set in the present, rather than the time period of the play, and reflect, in one way or another, the gender and sexual discrimination present in society.
